The MSRC Photonics and Optoelectronics Laboratory included two 32 square foot optical benches used, for example, for prism coupler, endfire coupling, and loss measurement setups for planar and 2-D waveguide and other measurements/setups. It also included a cryogenic lab (to 10 degrees K) for testing devices (e.g., CMOS devices, cleaved cavity Fabry-Perot lasers and VCSEL devices) at low temperatures and a Vickers scanning electron microscope allowing microstructure evaluation on samples up to six inches in diameter without the need for a conductive coating.
